Kasper Jordan

Kasper Charly Sjønning Jordan ble født 14. oktober 1919 i Andenes, Nordland, og vokste opp hos pleieforeldre på Finnfjordeidet. I februar 1941 dro Jordan til Lofoten for fiskearbeid og under Lofotraidet (Operasjon Claymore) 4. mars samme år kom han seg til England sammen med rundt 300 andre nordmenn.

I England gikk Jordan på rekruttskole og fikk opplæring før han ble sendt i tjeneste til Eskdale, en av to britiske jagere som ble overtatt av Den kongelige norske marine i 1942 og satt under norsk kommando.

Høsten 1942 røk en oljeledning under jakten på den tyske hjelpekrysseren Komet. Oljen ble antent under ildgivning og det var reell fare for at brannen ville spres til ammunisjonsskapet. Jordan skal da ha reddet situasjonen ved å kaste seg inn i flammene og stenge av oljen og hindret dermed en mulig eksplosjon. For sin modige handling ble han tildelt Krigsmedaljen.

I april 1943 eskorterte Eskdale sammen med andre skip (blant annet søsterskipet Glaisdale) konvoi PW 323. 14. april ble Eskdale truffet av flere torpedoer og sank. 25 av mannskapet på 180 mistet livet. Blant dem Jordan og hans halvbror Hans Viktor Oddvard Nilssen.

Av familie og venner ble Jordan beskrevet som en tjenestevillig og kjærlig person. På Finnfjordbotn gamle kirkegård reiste de pårørende en bauta til minne om Jordan. Kasper Charly Sjønning Jordan døde 14. april 1943, 23 år gammel.

Kasper Charly Sjønning Jordan was born 14th October 1919 in Andenes, Nordland and grew up with foster parents at Finnfjordeidet. In February 1941 Jordan travelled to Lofoten Islands for fishing and during Operation Claymore on March 4th Jordan was able to travel to England together with approximately 300 other Norwegians.

In England Jordan received training before being sent to serve on board Eskdale, one of two British destroyers given to the Royal Norwegian Navy and put under Norwegian commando.

In the autumn of 1942, a fire started on board Eskdale due to an oil leak during the chasing of the German merchant raider Komet. The fire spread and would have reached the ammunition storage if Jordan did not throw himself into the flames to stop the leakage. This action stopped a potential explosion.

In April 1943 Eskdale and other ships (including their sister ship Glaisdale) escorted Convoy PW 323. On the 14th of April Eskdale was hit by torpedoes and sunk. 25 of the crew of 180 lost their lives. Among them Jordan and his half-brother Hans Viktor Oddvard Nilssen.

By family and friends Jordan was described as a helpful and loving person, and they had a memorial made in his memory at Finnfjordbotn Old Cemetery.

Kasper Charly Sjønning Jordan died on 14th of April 1942; 23 years old.
