    The master referred to what had been entered in the report and further stated that he had only seen the periscope and the torpedo from the submarine, the nationality of which he has not therefore had any possibility of ascertaining. During the stay in the lifeboat this was not fired at. With regard to those who lost their lives, they saw nothing of A.B. Seaman Ole Lorentzen, ordinary seaman Alsex. Baird and A.B. Seaman Philp Cairness. Of these, A.B. Seaman Ole Lorentzen and ordinary seaman Alex. Baird were off duty and were in the cabin which they shared. This cabin was blown away as a result of the torpedoing. A.B. Seaman Philip Cairness was in the engine room where the torpedo struck the vessel.

    As the 1st witness appeared Hans Johan Hansen ... chief officer on board the s/s "Havtor"...

    The witness stated that he was on watch on the bridge, on the 11the June 1941 during the forenoon, where were also the captain and the helmsman, Sverre Halvorsen. Almost simultaneously the witness and the captain saw a torpedo approaching the vessel and 20-30 seconds afterwards it struck the vessel on the port side aft in way of the engine room and exploded instantly. The captain gave ordrers for the crew to go into the lifeboats and the survivors did so. Of those who lost their lives the witness did not see anything except fireman Andrew O'Dea who had made an attempt to get out of his cabin through the port hole without succeeding in this.

    As 2nd witness appeared Sverre Halvorsen ... A. B. Seaman on board the s/s "Havtor". ...

    The witness stated that he had taken over the turn at the wheel at 5 o'clock in the afternoon of the 11th June 1941 when, 5 minutes later, he heard the chief officer say to the captain:- There is a whale. It is a torpedo, the captain replied, and the witness looking through the wheel house window saw a torpedo approaching, about 40 metres from the vessel, and instantly an explosion occurred aft in the poop. After the explosion no order was given to the witness, nor to the engine room. The witness had not seen anything of the seamen who lost their lives execpt that he had seen a man stuck in a port hole on the starboard side.

    The witness stadet that he was on watch during the afternoon of the 11th June 1941 and was on the poop aft, on the starboard side, at the moment an explosion occurred. The witness was not clear as to whether it was a bomb or torpedo which had struck the vessel. At first the witness thought of fetching clothes and papers from his cabin, but had to give this up on account of steam coming up from the engine room. The witness then appreciated that there was nothing else to do than to get into the lifeboats. The witness belonged to the port lifeboat which however was found to have been smashed, in consequence of which he went along to the starboard lifeboat and got into it. From there the witness saw a seaman stuck in a port hole on the starboard side, but he had not seen anything of the others who lost their lives.
