"During the winter of 1941-42 Q/M Sverre ROALD made three voyages from his home in NORWAY to SHETLAND in his own fishing boat. On the first occasion he brought safely to the U.K. an agent who was in difficulties in AALESUND. On his two subsequent voyages he loaded large cargoes of arm and delivered them to AALESUND.
These activities made it necessary for him to leave NORWAY in April 1942 with his boat and family. His boat was taken over for use on clandestine operations in the flotilla of the secret SHETLAND base, and he, being thoroughly experienced as a shipwright on Norwegian fishing boats, joined the base as its senior shipwright.
The maintenance of the flotilla was a British Admiralty [commitment]. Under British direction on, Q/M ROALD worked tirelessly for three years to keep both fishing boats and submarine chasers fit for sea in all weathers, and it is largely due to his thorough workmanship, specialised knowledge and integrity that the Admiralty commitment could be fulfilled and that ships were able to sail continuously throughout each winter".
