In Norway, Second World War sailors are called "war sailors".

Krigsseilerregisteret/The War Sailor Register is a work in progress and has been ongoing since 2015. ARKIVET Peace and Human Rights Centre together with volunteers mainly from seafarer organizations in Norway strive to document and register several groups of sailors 1939-1945. Some of those are Norwegians and foreigners who sailed in the Norwegian merchant fleet (Nortraship), and those who sailed in the Norwegian navy.

If you have relevant War Sailor documentation such as: interview, personal account from the war, passport, seaman’s book, list of engagements on ships 1939-1945, examination papers, diplomas and medals, letters, photographs (profile pictures of War Sailors is especially of interest), video and audio, and so on, then please contact us. Material that is sent to us must however be tied to the war period 1939-1945.

We will archive this documentation and utilize it after the War Sailor in question is registered in The War Sailor Register. Please note that it may take som time to process inquiries. Only information that is deemed relevant for The War Sailor Register and considered reliable, is registered.

It is important to inform about birth date of the War Sailor and document that the person was engaged as crew on a ship. References to all relevant source material for the information provided, is welcome.

The following biographical information is of interest to register in War Sailor profiles: first and middle name, last name, birth date, death date, cause of death, birth place, parents, wife (during the war), place of living (during the war), nickname, gender, nationality, and so on. We are also interested in a short account of what they did before, during and after the war.

If you have documentation that you wish publised in The War Sailor Register/Krigsseilerregisteret, such as a diary uploaded as an attachment and tied to a War Wailors profile, then it is preferred that it is submitted as a PDF. Photographs are submitted as JPG and of the best picture quality.

It is of importance to note that rights to the documentation must be clarified before submission. Otherwise, it can not be published in the War Sailor Register.
