Historikk 1. verdenskrig:
Sjømannen var maskinvakt da D/S NIDELVEN den 27. april 1917 ble minesprengt av en mine fra den tyske ubåten UC-29 nordøst for Coquet Island. Skipet var på reise fra Tyne til Svolvær med kull og passasjerer. 3 av mannskapet og den russiske passasjeren Lapaychuk omkom i forliset. De overlevende ble berget av britiske marinefartøyer og ført til Leith.
