"Under instruksjon i bruk av håndgranater 9. desember 1941, ombord i et skip på vei fra Shetland til Norge, falt en usikret granat ut av hånden på instruktøren og ned på dørken. Bråthen grep da granaten for å kaste den overbord, men den eksploderte like etterat den hadde forlatt hånden hans. 3 mann ble drept og 19 såret. Gravlagt i Lerwick på Shetland".
