"Herstein" ble senket på havnen i Rabaul, New Guinea. Mannskapet ble reddet og innlosjert på land som fanger.
26. juni 1942 ble mannskapet unntatt kapteinen brakt om bord i "Montevideo Maru" for transport til Japan.
Den faktiske datoen for senkingen av "Montevideo Maru" er 1. juli 1942 og ikke 10. juli 1942.
