Ifølge Kravskjema og undersøkelser i arkiv til Direktoratet for sjømenn, var Sverkeli påmønstret M/T NYHOLT 1. januar 1942 til 17. januar 1942. Det er ukjent hvilken stilling han hadde om bord.

"Gift 1934 i Odda med Sofie Anderson. 2 barn. Reiste med M/T NYHOLT for å overta en stilling på en annen båt, og omkom 17. januar 1942 da skipet ble torpedert, ca. 200 n. mil øst for Cap Race, Newfoundland, på reise mellom Reykjavik og New York".

I mannskapslisten til M/T NYHOLT står Sverkeli oppført som passasjer. Opplysningen er imidlertid i konflikt med dokumentasjon fra Direktoratet for sjømenn.
