Olav Olsen dro til sjø for første gang i 1937, og han seilte både før, under og etter krigen på en rekke norske skip. Etter et kortere opphold i Norge etter krigen, returnerte han til Storbritannia og bosatte seg i Liverpool. Her arbeidet han både i kullgruver og på skipsverft.
