Brandal var om bord på Siremalm som var lastet med jernmalm for England da krigen brøt ut. Etter dette seilte han to år i konvoi over Atlanterhavet og tre år på østkysten av England. Under invasjonen i Frankrike seilte han med et ammunisjonsskip.
