"Louie [Zamperini] satt i cellen sin [i Ofuna], skalv og ba. En norsk sjømann, Thorbjørn Christiansen, syntes synd på ham og ga ham en gave som godt kan ha reddet livet hans. Christensen gravde gjennom eiendelene sine, trakk fram en frakk og lot Louie overta den. Louie krøllet seg sammen, holdt ut og håpet at han ikke ville lide samme skjebne som Minsaas".
