For å få utenriks fartstid, tok han hyre som matros på D/S SNEFJELD, reiste ut ved krigsutbruddet og forliste med dette skipet i oktober 1940.
Omkom som 3.Styrmann på tankskipet M/T NORDTIND som ble senket i Atlanteren av tysk u- båt U- 358 den 26.januar 1943.
