I brev datert 5. februar 1973 fra Sæther til Direktoratet for sjømenn, skriver han: "Etter torpederingen av M/T Orkanger ble jeg, etter anmodning av Nortraship, London, sendt ombord i det britiske passasjerskipet "Rodi" som styrmann. Det ble en heller varm fart med "the suicide convoys" i fart på Malta og Libya med tropper og ammunisjon. Etter flere krigshandlinger, bl.a. to minesprengninger i Tobruk, fikk vi skipet i sterkt skadet stand, inn til verksted i Alexandria".
