Langeland var ansatt ved Nortraship Suningdale som eksaminator fra midten av 1941 til krigens slutt.

Langeland var om bord på D/S Røyksund da skipet ble angrepet av tyske fly 27. mai 1941. På reise i konvoi fra Falmouth til Bristolkanalen i ballast. Ble angrepet av tyske fly mellom Trevose Head og Hartland Point. En bombe traff maskinrommet, drepte tre mann, sprengte ut skutesiden og knuste livbåtene på dekket over. Røyksund sank nesten umiddelbart, og tvang mannskapet til å hoppe over bord. Eskorten kom umiddelbart til unnsetning og tok folkene opp av vannet. Tre nordmenn og fire briter omkom.
