Var 1. styrmann på MT SVEVE av Bergen, da skipet ble torpedert kl. 1255 den 10. september 1942, underveis fra Clyde til Curacao. Hele besetningen på 39 mann ble reddet av eskortefartøyene.
Øverås meldte seg til marinen og ble utdannet til inspeksjons- og vepningsoffiser ved Sjøforsvarets Skytteravdeling for Handelsflåten.
