Han var 3. styrmann ombord på D/S SIMLA tilhørende Wilhelm Wilhelmsens rederi, da skipet ble senket på vei til England fra Philadelphia. 5 mann av besetningen omkom, mens 26 mann ble reddet.
Meldte seg senere til marinen og ble utdannet til inspeksjons- og vepningsoffiser ved Sjøforsvarets Skytteravdeling for Handelsflåten.
Etter endt utdannelse gjorde han tjeneste som inspeksjonsoffiser, blandt annet i Falmouth til ca. 20. november 1944.
