Finn Godvin Bryde påmønstret hvalfangeren Torlyn som ble tatt som prise av tysk hjelpekrysser den 14. januar 1941. Han ble satt i land i Frankrike og senere repatriert til Norge. I følge brev fra A/S Thor Dahl, hvalfangstrederi datert 25. oktober 1945 kom han til Sandefjord den 5. mai 1941.
