Reiste til sjøs 1933 med dampskipet BORDVIK av Farsund,tilhørende Lundegaard & Sønner.
Styrmannseksamen 1937 og skipsførereksamen 1940 i Farsund.
Var hjemme i Norge under okkupasjonen i 1940.
Rømte ut fra Farsund sammen med 12 kamerater 13.september 1941, i fiskebåten VIOLA og landet i Montrose, Skotland, den 17. september etter en hard tørn over Nordsjøen. Seilte som styrmann med norske tankbåter fra han kom over.
Gikk et fenrik kurs Travers Island, New York 28.7 - 24.9.1943, og seilte senere som styrmann og gunneroffiser med M/T POLARTANK,til han fikk den å føre sommeren 1946.
