Stymanns- og skipperskole.
Hadde vært med som frivillig i Finlands frihetskamp 1918 og fått minnemedalje og tapperhets-medalje, var i den franske Fremmedlegionen fra 1932 til 1937 og fikk 4 medaljer. Da Finland kom i krig i desember 1939, forlot han stilling som styrmann på D/S TOPDALSFJORD og reiste igjen til Finland. Kom tilbake til Norge og var med som frivillig i krigen her i april 1940. Under kampene i Østre Gausdal 27.april 1940 og meldte seg sammen med to andre for uskadeliggjøre en tysk tank. Herunder ble han skutt fra tanken på 10 meters hold. Liket av Bjørn Dahl Andersen ble brent av tyskerne på gården Frøise.
