"Var styrmann på D/S GRANLI da skipet i 1940 i konvoi fra England til Canada ble angrepet av u-båter. Et engelsk skip ble senket, og Benum ledet det vanskelige redningsarbeid i høy sjø. Gikk høsten 1940 på fly-skole i Canada, senere fly-kurs i England, blei august 1941 flyger i 330. squaderon, stasjonert på Island. Han var en kort tid instruktør ved fly-skolen i Canada. Den 5.april 1945 førte han et Sunderlandfly på vei til Island. Flyet kom i brann, og han forsøkte å gå ned. I den høye sjø ble den ene vingen brukket, og flyet kantet. Alle omkom".

"In connection with this rescue [EMPIRE VOLUNTEER, senket 15. september 1940] the Chief Officer of the "Granli" swam in the rough sea to a float on which there were six survivors who were too exhausted to grasp a line when it was thrown to them. [...] In these circumstances it is submitted for approval that he should be awarded the Gallantry Silver Medal."
