Trygve Alsaker, Private, Company C, 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate). Trygve Alsaker, was born May 23, 1912 in Bergen, Norway and died Aug 20, 1944, in France as an American Soldier and today Trygve rests at the Brittany American Cemetery, France, with his comrades in arms. 

In July 1942, He married to Mary B. Brosnan, of 1450 Taylor Ave, Bronx 60, New York and enlisted into the Army Sept 22. As a Norwegian citizen, he was offered a position in a newly formed Norwegian-American unit at Ft. Snelling, MN, where He arrived on October 31, 1942. He was assigned that day to Company C, of the 99th Infantry Battalion (Separate), the Viking Battalion.

He trained as a Ski Trooper and Mountaineer in Colorado High Rockies and received his American Citizenship on March 18, 1944, while billeted at the Welsh estate of Glanusk Park, UK. The battalion sailed for France on June 17 and he landed in Normandy, after a brutal channel storm pounded their ships and the landing beaches from June 17-19.

He was killed north of Paris near the Norman town of Elbuef, on the Seine, on August 20, 1944. But this was not his first encounter with the German war machine. That occurred before he joined the Army.

Trygve Alsaker was one of many 99th soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice during WWII. But he was also one of many Norwegian merchant sailors who found themselves cut off from their homeland in April 1940, when Nazi Germany invaded Norway. He had become what the Norwegians call a Warsailor, and part of the Allied Merchant Marine.
