Var under 2. verdenskrig 1. styrmann på Dampskip D.S. HVOSLEF og ble 10.03.1942 torpedert av tysk ubåt U-94 like utenfor DELAWARE BAY og som gikk ned etter bare 2 minutter. Av et mannskap på 20 omkom 6 personer. 1. Styrmann Ambjørnsen ble reddet. Han ble skadet under torpederingen og ble pensjonert av NORTRASHIP. Han er tildelt Krigsmedaljen.
Ambjørnsen var en av de første krigsseilerne som kom hjem til Sandøya i 1945.
Nytt Skippersertifikat utstedt 30.11.1945 da eldre skippersertifikat tapt ved Krigsforlis.
