Antatt i marinen og ble utdannet til skytter i Camp Norway, Lunenburg, Canada.

Senere gjorde han tjeneste som skytter på følgende norske handelsskip:
M/T SOLFONN fra 10.7.1941 til 23.05.1944.
Var deretter på SSH TRAVERS ISLAND fra 24.5.1944 til 8.7.1944.
M/S THALATTA fra 9.7.1944 til 13.2.1945. Dette skip var førøvrig med på frigjøringen av Madagaskar.
D/S NORELG fra 14.3.1945 til 18.9.1945.

Han ble dimittert fra marinen på Garnes ved Bergen den 19.september 1945.
