« - [...] i 1928 dro jeg for første gang på hvalfangst, jeg var da messegutt på landstasjonen på Syd-Georgia. Etter 1 år der dro jeg ut som matros, 16 år gammel. Jeg var da med en hvalbåt tilhørende «Southern Empress»-ekspedisjonen. Etter blant annet å ha virket som skytter i 1936; Saldana Bay, Syd-Afrika, kom jeg i 1937 tilbake til «Southern Empress» som skytter. Men så kom krigen, og det ble England og the Royal Navy Reserve hvor jeg gikk inn som løytnant. Og så ble det minesveipere og eskortebåter, Adriaterhavet og Normandie».
