Nilssen tok maskinisteksamen i Kristiansand.
Var påmønstret D/S TORA ELISE 20. mars 1940 da skipet ble angrepet av tyske fly i Nordsjøen. Bidro til at skipet kom seg til lands etter angrepet. Se "dokumenter".
Giftet seg i godt voksen alder med Johanne Helene, datter av Indiane og Thyge Thygesen fra Lillesand. De fikk 6 barn sammen.
Han døde 27. oktober 1973 på sykehjem i Arendal.
Var på ds Tora Elise under bunnskaden 6. juni 1941.
