Ved utbruddet av krigen var han påmønstret D/S HILDUR I og sto ombord der til 20.12.1941, da han meldte seg til tjeneste i marinen, og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Scotland.
Senere gjorde han tjeneste som skytter på følgende norske handelsskip:
D/S RUTH I fra 3.3.1942 til 15.10.1942
D/S IDEFJORD fra 6.11.1942 til 1.5.1943
M/T KALDFONN fra 1.6.1943 til 27.12.1943

Ble innlagt på sykehus 11.7.1944
Reiste hjem med til Norge den 21.9.1945 med D/S STAVANGERFJORD
