Under 2.verdenskrig førte Berntsen følgende skip: d.s. MIMER, (1.750 d.w.) tilhørende S. A.
LARSEN & E. THORVILDSEN, Oslo. m.t. HAVKONG, (15.075 d.w.) tilhørende. P. MEDYER, Oslo.
d.s. CARRIER, 4.700 d.w.) tilhørende. V. SKOGLUND, Haugesund.
Den 19.01.1945 befant d.s. CARRIER seg i en konvoi fart fra Barking til Tyne . Det var
storm og snøbyger da skipet ble minesprengt. Vannet trengte øyeblikkelig inn i maskinrom,
fyr rom og bunker. Maskineriet og pumper ble satt ut av spill. Et annet skip forsøkte å hjelpe, sleper ble satt ombord, men brakk straks i den tunge sjøen. Den britiske marinen ble alarmert og sendte ut destroyeren
HMS BLENCATRA.
Den forsøkte også å ta CARRIER under slep, men mislykket. Carrier lå nå så dypt i sjøen
at Berntsen måtte ta den tunge avgjørelsen at besetningen på 33 måtte forlate skipet.
Til tross for temmelig høy sjø klarte besetningen å få satt ut to av livbåtene. Samtlige ble
tatt opp av destroyeren.
Neste dag forlot destroyeren området og hele besetningen fra CARRIER ble få timer
senere landsatt i Immingham.
Skipsfører Knud Berntsen døde 17.mai 1954, 60 år gammel.
