Seilte under hele krigen som skipsfører på MS Rosenvile med unntak av 2 måneder fra september 1944, da han etter anmodning fra amerikanske myndigheter tjenestegjorde som militærgeograf for US marines i general McArthurs stab. Dette var i forbindelse med planleggingen av operasjon King Two som var amerikanernes invasjon av Leyte Island på Filipinene.
