Mønstret av hvalkokeriet " SOUTHERN EMPRESS" i Liverpool og gjorde senere tjeneste i den engelske marine i ca. 16 måneder.
Antatt i marinen og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Scotland.
Senere gjorde han tjeneste som skytter på følgende norske handelsskip:
M/S TAMERLANE fra 5.11.1941 til 31.12.1941.
M/S SKELBRED fra 31.12.1941 til 2.8.1943.
M/S KARMT fra 2.9.1943 til3.7.1944.
D/S BERGENSFJORD fra 1.8.1944 til 22.6.1945.
For sin innsats for Norge under den annen verdenskrig ble han ble tildelt Haakon den VII`s 70 års medalje.
