Foreldrene var norske. John ble med til Norge da han var 3 år gammel (Lista) Bodde i Norge til han var 23 år. Da han kom til USA i 1940 kom han med norsk pass. Ettersom han var født i USA fikk han umiddelbart amerikansk pass. Han har vært amerikansk statsborger siden den gang.
