Etter et opphold i land ble Andersen sendt til Shanghai for å fortsette sin tjeneste som 1. maskinist om bord i M/S HAI PING. Han ble i stedet internert av japanerne og satt i japansk fangenskap fra desember 1941 og ut krigen (til 30. juni 1945).
Kom hjem med ASTREA fra Newcastle den 3. januar 1946.
