Ex gratia-arkivet:
Registernummer under krigen: London 11714. NY 553. Som besetningsmedlem på Hird deltok Kåre Olaf Bjerke i evakueringen av britiske og franske soldater fra Dunkerque i 1940. Da Hird ble torpedert i september 1940 var han 28 døgn om bord i en livbåt før de ble plukket opp av islandske fiskere. Etter dette meldte han seg frivillig til den britiske marine og tjenestegjorde om bord i hjelpekrysseren Queen Emma. Deltok i commandoraidene i Svolvær, Måløy og Lofoten. Ble overført den norske marinen 18.12.1941, han tjenestegjorde om bord i MTB-54 og MTB-56 i den engelske kanal. Var også om bord i Korvetten Eglandstein på konvoitjeneste i Nord-Atlanteren. Deltok også i minelegging av nederlandske og franske havner. Han ble dimittert fra marinen 23.11.1945.
