Andersen tjenestegjorde 4 måneder i den Norske hær i perioden 1913-1915.
M/S HELIOS ble kapret av japanere utenfor Saigon 8. desember 1941. Mannskapet ble satt i land på forskjellige plasser. Andersen havnet i Shanghai, og ble derfra sendt med S/S Narkunda til UK.
