Andersen skriver i et brev til Direktoratet for sjømenn datert 14.9.1972: "Ferncastle ble senket av en tysk raider i det indiske hav 17.6.1943, 19mann av den 39 mann store bestetningen kom seg i livbåt, de øvrige omkom. Etter 30døgn i livbåt landet 13 mann den 17.7.1943 på Madagaskar (Nosyvrica), 6mann døde i livbåten. Alle de overlevende var da selvfølgelig meget medtatte."
