Vi kjenner imidlertid til at han var ombord i d.s. IRIS av Bergen, tilhørende Det Bergenske Dampskipsselskap som tømmermann, da dette skip grunnstøtte den 04.10.1944 ved innseiling til Cape Harrison, Labrador. Skipet kondemnert. Alle ombord ble reddet.
