Antatt i marinen og ble utdannet til skytter i Camp Norway, Lunenburg, Canada.
Senere gjorde han tjeneste som skytter på følgende norske handelsskip:
M/T NORSKTANK fra 6.12.1941 til 24.2.1942.
M/T LEIV EIRIKSSON fra 11.5.1942 til 27.6.1942
D/T LITIOPA fra 8.9.1942 til skipet ble senket 22.10.1943 av tysk undervannsbåt utenfor Freetown. Hele besetningen på 35 mann ble reddet.
Videre var han ombord i:
D/S NORFALK fra 10.2.1944 til 1.7.1944.
M/T VARDEFJELL fra 14.7.1944 til 15.4.1945.
M/S SØNNAVIND fra 28.5.1945 til 23.4.1946.
