Antatt i marinen og ble utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Skottland. Senere gjorde han tjeneste som skytter på følgende norske handelsskip:
D/S CHRISTIAN MICHELSEN fra 19. juli 1943 til skipet ble torpedert underveis fra New York til Bizerte med krigsmateriell den 26. september 1943. Av en besetning på 53 mann, omkom 40. Bare tre norske skyttere ble reddet. Etter denne tragedien var han om bord i :
M/T MOSLI fra 12. oktober 1943 til 8. november 1943.
Senere hadde han landtjeneste på SSH Travers Island til han ble dimittert den 1. oktober 1944.
