Mønstringene under krigen er ført i henhold til opplysninger i Ex gratia-arkivet.
I søknad om Ex gratia-utbetaling, skriver Nilsen: "Mønstret av M/T India ex Germania den 24/3.41 etter å ha blitt opptatt ved "Little Norway" i Canada. Påmønstret M/S Bonita (Engelsk) for reisen fra Port Elizabeth til U.K. M/S Bonita var Engelsk skip under Panama flagg og ble ikke påført mitt sertifikat. Noen dager etter ankomst U.K. reiste jeg med M/S Star til Montreal for videre reise til "Little Norway". Måtte desverre påmønstret "Alexandra Høegh den 26/7.41 i Montreal da dette skip ikke hadde nok styrmenn. Mitt styrmannssertifikat er desverre gått tapt".
Nilsen var påmønstret M/T THORSHØVDI 24. mai 1943 til 24. april 1944. Skipet ble minesprengt 4. august 1943.
