Nævestad var påmønstret D/S HVOSLEF som matros og omkom 10. mars 1942 da skipet
ble torpedert 2 nautiske mil øst for Fenwick Island, på reise fra Sagua la Grande til Boston. 6 av en besetning på 20 omkom. Torpedert av tysk ubåt, U-94 (Ites).
