M/S Nyhorn kom til Casablanca den 30 juni 1940, ble der tilbakeholdt av Vichy-myndighetene. Mannskapet flyktet fra skipet den 9 mai 1942, og kom til Gibraltar. Aursland ble sendt som passasjer med " Hoptorn " og ankom England 12 juli 1942.
