Reiste til sjøs i oktober 1930 på D/S"Spurt" tilhørende Lundegaard
& Sønner,Farsund.Mønstret av og på samme skip flere ganger
inntil han i november 1933 mønstret av "SPURT" som jungmann.
Fortsatte sin sjøtjeneste som lettmatros i mars 1935 på D/S
"LILLGUNVOR",tilhørende Th.Brøvig,Farsund .hvor han i april 1936
mønstret av i New York.
Tok styrmannseksamen i 1937 i Farsund og telegrafisteksamen
i Tønsberg 1938.
Etter endt skoleeksamen i Tønsberg reiste han ut som 3.styrmann
på D/S"LØVSTAD",tilhørende Samuelsen,Farsund hvor han stod
ombord hele 2.verdenskrig til 17 mai 1945.
Da han stod ombord i L"ØVSTAD",var han med på en av krigens
største redningsbragd ,Skipet "EL MEDINA" et engelsk passasjerskip
som hadde ca 1200 personer ombord,1000 soldater og et mannskap
på 200,ble torpedert i konvoi .Syvert Vindheim var en av
styrmennene som gikk i en av livbåtene til Løvstad og plukket opp
overlevende.Den offisielle opplysningen ble det reddet 814 personer
I mai 1945 mønstret han på Wilhelmsen skipet "TRICOLOR" hvorpå
han mønstret av i Oslo august 1945.
Etter krigen reiste han ut som 2.styrmann i juli 1946 på D/T"TORBORG"
tilhørende Mosvolds Rederi,Farsund. I 1947 mønstret han av for å
ta skiipperskolen i Farsund,med eksamen påfølgende år,Fikk sin
første skute M/T"MOSOIL" som kaptein i 1950.
Fortsatte hos Mosvolds Rederi inntil han tok pensjonen i 1974.
Døde 10.juli 2008.
Var medlem av Farsunds Sjømannsforening.
