Han mønstret av M/T Ora i Sydney NSW for å ta ferie. Da han meldte seg til tjeneste igjen, var det vanskelig å få hyre i Australia, og han fikk da tillatelse av konsulatet til å ta hyre på amerikanske skip. Fra oktober 1943 til krigens slutt seilte han som skipper på skip tilhørende den amerikanske armé.
