Han var norsk statsborger under krigen. Forlot Norge i februar 1938 og gikk ombord i "Storviken" i Rotterdam som 3. styrmann og telegrafist..
Han har opplyst at han var om bord i utenlandsk skip CALIFORNIA STAR i en måned, fra Cape Town til Wellington, NZ, men ikke oppgitt dato. Dette må ha vært mellom avmønstring M/T Elise 23.11.42 og påmønstring M/T Pan Scandia 16.06.43.
