Gundersen var med som ekstramann på Kvarstadbåten, hvalkokeri D/S "Skytteren" som ble senket av eget mannskap etter trefning med tyske armerte trålere. Mannskapet ble tatt til fange og sendt til leirene Milag og Marlag Nord. Gundersen ble overført til andre tyske fangeleirer som N.N. fange. Kom til Sverige 28.4.1945 fra Neuengamme. Til Norge 28.5.1945.
Bosatte seg i Uddevalla, Sverige.
