I følge kravskjemaet:
M/S "Gabon" ble internert i fransk havn (Dakar) 5.7.1940. Bjørnestad ble tilbudt hjemreise til Norge. Men i perioden fra avmønstring M/S "Gabon" til påmønstring M/S "Grado" arbeidet han seg fram til England via Portugal. (Se mønstringer)
I tidsrommet fra avmønstring M/T "Morgenen" 15.2.1943 og fram til ca. 19.7.1945 tjenestegjorde han som kokk ved det norske sykehuset Templeton i London. Han tiltrådte der etter inngått avtale om at han ved denne tjeneste skulle beholde sin status som sjømann, og at tjenesten skulle betraktes som fartstid.For dette tidsrommet ble han innvilget sjømannspensjon.
