M/T Brarena ble internert og rekvirert av italienske myndigheter i Napoli 10.06.40. Deler av mannskapet ble sendt hjem til Norge, mens noen endte i fangenskap.
Kvalheim skriver i søknad om ferielønn: "Blev tat til fange i Italia i juni 1940 til 30. august 1944".
Han fikk fangenskapslønn til 30. oktober 1944.
