I tiden 1940 til 1943 seilte han som sivil sjømann på følgende norske handelsskip:
M/S ELISE.
M/T DAGEID.
M/S WASHINGTON EXPRESS.
Senere var han om bord på det norske marinefartøyet ML-210 som ble minesprengt 15.februar 1944 utenfor Somme. 5 mann av besetningen ble drept og mange alvorlig såret.
Ble deretter utdannet til skytter i Dumbarton, Skottland, og gjorde siden tjeneste på:
M/T ANNA KNUDSEN.
M/T FAGERFJELL.
M/T FENRIS.
