"Kom hjem fra langfart med m/s Snestad i februar 1940 og var på ferie i Telemark da krigen brøt ut. Meldte seg som frivillig og var med i kampene i Vinje. Falt ved Åmot i Vinje 4. mai 1940. Gravlagt på Skotfoss".
Dagbladet, 27. mai 1940:
"Til familien på Skotfoss er innløpt det triste budskap at Håkon Bergan var funnet død etter en trefning i Ytre Vinje. Håkon Bergan ble 24 år gammel".
"Vinjesvingen. Et lite blad av krigens historie i Norge", s. 114:
"Dessverre viste det seg senere at en norsk gutt, Håkon Bergan, var falt i trefningen ved Leirli bru. Han ble senere begravet i sin hjembygd, Skotfoss, under stor deltagelse i nærvær av sjefen for I.R.3.".
