Da krigen brøt ut, tjenestegjorde han som los på jageren SLEIPNER under vaktholdet på Finnmarkskysten. Var senere los på en mindre lastebåt, men ble tvunget til å lose en stor, tysk malmbåt, D/S MICHAEL, og omkom 1. april 1942 da skipet ble senket.
