Gift 1930 i Narvik med Elise Danielsen, f. 1899 i Hamarøy. 2 barn.
Styrmanns-, radiotelegrafist- og skipsførereksamen. Var fører på D/S BARØY i mange år til den ble senket på Vestfjorden 12. september 1941. Ble reddet og førte senere D/S NORD-NORGE. Da skipet var på vei fra Sarpsborg til Narvik, ble det torpedert 24. mars 1944, og Liland omkom.
